Alabama Virtual Library

On Monday, April 6, students in Alabama will begin online instruction to complete the school year.  The Hoover Public Library is here to support our local teachers, parents, and students.  And one of the ways we can help is by making it easy to find the resources you need, like the AVL.

The Alabama Virtual Library provides all students, teachers, and citizens of the State of Alabama with online access to essential library and information resources. It is primarily a group of online databases that have magazine, journal, and newspaper articles for research.  The website was redesigned in 2019, resulting in more intuitive site navigation and improved search capability.  It is easy to find materials for elementary, middle, and high school students.  There are several ebook libraries as well as Spanish-language content.  The AVL is providing expanded support and services in response to school and library closings due to COVID-19.  Some of our databases, such as PebbleGO and Britannica Ebooks, have expanded content.  There are also some EBSCO products that we only have access to for a limited time.

The website uses geolocation to determine if you are in the state of Alabama.  If that function isn't working for you, call the AVL Help Desk by phone at 1-800-338-8320 or 256-971-7487.  I had to do it because I am using a hot spot to have internet access while I'm working from home.  The hot spot insists that I am in Georgia.  A quick phone call got me a temporary login and password that will be valid for two months.

I hope these resources will serve you well as you endeavor to help our students complete the school year under these unusual circumstances.  I also hope that you will continue to see the AVL as a must-have resource once life goes back to normal.

The state provides another extremely helpful service to all Alabama residents.  Homework Alabama offers free homework help, tutoring, and test prep for all ages.  The one-on-one online tutoring is available daily 8 a.m.-11 p.m. until May 31, in response to school and library closures.  The writing lab, test prep tools, self-study resources, and drop-off reviews are available 24/7.
