Children's Book Week

Ah, Children's Book Week (May 13-19,2013) -- one of my favorite weeks of the year.  Yes, it's a week devoted to children's books, but it is so much more!  Established in 1919, it is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country.  It is sponsored by Every Child a Reader and the Children's Book Council.  The official website has tons of great celebration ideas for kids and teachers/librarians.  Will you read a Children's Choice Book Awards title?  Will you stage a Read-In?  Will you go all out and party with the Hoover Public Library at Booklandia on May 17, 2013?  I hope the answer is YES!, especially to question number three.  Booklandia not only honors Children's Book Week, it also kicks off Summer Reading 2013.  See my next blog post for more information.

The picture with this blog is the official bookmark, created by author-illustrator Grace Lin.  If you read Where the Mountain Meets the Moon or Starry River of the Sky, you might recognize her handiwork.  Can you spot the letters hidden in the picture?  What do they spell?  Check your answer and learn how to draw a Chinese dragon using letters by clicking here.
