Tremendous Trio of Female Pilots

Dorothy the Brave, Fly Girl, Fly, and Taking Off

I like to match up two new books in Perfect Pair posts on this blog.  But, this time, I have three titles that work well together.  Say hello to this Tremendous Trio!

Dorothy the Brave by Meghan P. Browne (03/29/22)
Dorothy Lucas yearned to discover all that she was capable of. After the devastating news of Pearl Harbor, her brothers joined the World War II war effort, but Dorothy wanted to do her part, too.   So, she  enlisted to serve as a Women Airforce Service Pilot  (WASP). After hours of flight school and roaring engines, Dorothy and her fellow WASPs risked their lives towing targets in the air for the male fighter pilots in training. Through many mechanical scares and smoke-filled cockpits, Dorothy remained brave and committed to her job–defying gravity and defying the odds.

Fly, Girl, Fly!: Shaesta Waiz Soars Around the World by Nancy Roe Pimm (09/22/20)
Shaesta Waiz, a refugee from Afghanistan, dreamed of doing great things. But first she had to leave a refugee camp with her family to make a new life in America, overcome gender stereotypes, be the first in her family to go to college, and overcome her fear of flying. After becoming a pilot, Shaesta made the flight of a lifetime by crossing five continents, making thirty stops in twenty-two countries across nearly 25,000 nautical miles. At the age of thirty, Shaesta was the youngest woman and the first from Afghanistan to circumnavigate the globe by herself in a single-engine aircraft.

Taking Off: Airborne with Mary Wilkins Ellis by Emily Arnold McCully (02/01/22)
As a child, Mary Wilkins Ellis longed to fly, but she had to wait until she was 16 before she could have her first lesson. She soon became the youngest licensed pilot in her English county, but then all civilian flight was banned when Germany launched its attacks on Britain in 1940. Mary was grounded.  One day she chanced to hear a radio appeal for Britons with pilot’s licenses—even women—to join the Air Transport Auxiliary and ferry brand new fighter planes to Royal Air Force bases. Mary immediately applied, and spent the rest of the war delivering hundreds of different kinds of aircraft—most of which she’d never flown before—forming lifelong bonds with her colleagues, surviving many a close call, and helping to save her country from destruction.  After the war she became a flight instructor, ran an air taxi service, then managed an airfield, the only woman in Europe to do so. In her spare time, she won rallies in her racing car.  Mary’s childhood dream became a thrilling lifetime aloft, lasting until she died at 101.
