Part 1, The Scripture of Nature (1851-1890), follows the creation of Yosemite and Yellowstone National Parks and shows how John Muir became their eloquent defender.

In Part 2, The Last Refuge (1890-1915), John Muir leads a failed conservation movement to secure protection for the national parks, and President Theodore Roosevelt establishes a number of National Monuments, including Devil's Tower, Crater Lake, and the Grand Canyon.

In Part 5, Great Nature (1933-1945), Franklin D. Roosevelt creates the Civilian Conservation Corps to battle unemployment during the Great Depression, spawning a "golden age" of park renovation projects. Also, the President is pressured to open the parks to mining and lumbering during World War II.
