Anne Herbert is a painter located in Birmingham, Alabama, where she teaches visual arts at the Alabama School of Fine Arts. Anne regularly exhibits throughout the Southeast and nationally. In her paintings, material, image and conceptual research are bolstered by contemporary methodologies, but grounded in historical painting philosophies. Anne received her BFA in Painting from the University of Montevallo in 2007 and MFA from the University of Alabama in 2013.
By its nature, a painting is a record of gestures. Containing, as a part of its whole, all of the collected moments of its making, as well as some that came before. In this reflective process of painting, the past and present are superimposed with fact and feeling to form a new reality. In my paintings, I question the images as I make them, pivot away from specific resolution and eventually arrive at something that has multiple possible ways to be seen and understood. Through interpretation, the process, material and image intersect, recalling the fullness and complexity of experience.
