The twelth annual Free Comic Book Day is coming up on Saturday, May 4th. Every year, participating comic book stores across North America give out free comic books to encourage new readership for comics and graphic novels. Putting free reading material in the hands of the people is something that we obviously encourage and support as a library. Did you know that we have comics as well as fiction and nonfiction graphic novels for kids, teens and adults in the various departments around the library?

We have an extensive collection of Christian nonfiction here at the Hoover Public Library. If you are looking for something from popular insipirational authors like Joel Osteen, Joyce Meyer, T.D. jakes, Gary Chapman, Anne Lamott or local author David Platt , we have what you need. If you are looking for classics from C.S. Lewis, Dietrich Bonhoeffer or Billy Graham, we have those as well. We have books detailing the history of the Christian church and its various denominations, and ones on building the church of the future. We have books of prayers, hymns and daily devotionals. We even have books on dieting and nutrition from a Christian perspective!

For more information, take a look at the National Book Foundation's official website. Click on the blue title to check the availability of the book in Jefferson County.

Children in Alabama are very familiar with tornadoes, but they may not understand hurricanes. Even if they've heard of Hurricane Katrina and the trouble she caused for New Orleans in 2005, that was literally a lifetime ago for them. If you're trying to explain Hurricane Sandy and her aftermath to your kids, here's a list of books that can help.

Have you discovered the Friends Gallery at the Hoover Public Library? Simply take the stairs or elevator in the lobby down to the first floor. The hallway between The Library Theatre and our meeting rooms has been converted into an art gallery. Our feature artist for the month of October is Kate Merritt Davis. During the months of November and December, her art will be displayed in our Administrative Gallery.

The Fiction Department is now offering our popular "Book My Favorites" program in large print and audio book (CD) formats in addition to the regular print format. Please note that your choice of format applies to all selected authors. Should your title not be available in your requested format, you will be placed on hold for the regular print copy.

In addition to offering new formats, we've also added the following authors as options for automatic reserves:

Mary Kay Andrews
Dorothea Benton Frank
Scott Turow

To add any of these authors to your Book My Favorites enrollment or to change your format, please click on the link below to sign up online or call the Fiction Desk at 205-444-7820.

September 19, 2012 is the tenth anniversary of International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Sure, a holiday devoted to talking like pirates sounds like a goofy idea, but I think everyone needs a little goofiness now and then. There are several ways the Hoover Public Library can help you celebrate. Obviously, we have plenty of books and movies about pirates. And, yes, there will be a list of some of the newest and best at the end of this post. But I want to focus on something you may not be aware of . . . Mango Languages.

Thanks to everyone who submitted a picture of their pet in our Pets of the Library Photo Contest. Winners will be featured on our website and Facebook page and will receive a $25 VISA gift card.

Congratulations to Katie Thompson for her picture of Annie, Laura Pounders Edwards for her picture of Chloe, and Kelli Cannon for her picture of Kitty!
Summer is officially here (although honestly the weather thought it was summer in April)! As kids are getting out of school and family vacations are coming up, the nonfiction department has put up a new display by the plaza! This display features all sorts of fun summer activities, from picnic cook books to making your own popsicles to outdoor home projects to outdoor sports, including swimming, hiking, biking, fishing, and camping. There are also some books on the summer sports, like tennis and baseball and golf!
See the full list here. And did you know that one of the Young People's Literature finalists has an Alabama tie? Be sure to check out Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai.

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment.

As students head back to school, the Hoover Public Library wants to make sure that all children and teens have the most important school supply of all -- a library card. Owning a library card provides students with the resources they need to compete academically. Public libraries provide students free access to databases of news articles, encyclopedias and test preparation materials, as well as homework help and resources. In addition, public libraries are the number one access point for free Internet, an important resource for families without access at home.

A library card is serious business, but it's also an opportunity for fun! Library card holders of all ages can get their hands on tons of fantastic books, movies, video games . . . the list goes on and on.

The Hoover Public Library just wanted to give props to Bike Link of Hoover! Their motto is "Serious fun!", and they live up to it. Bike Link has been a big-time supporter of our summer reading program for years, and 2011 is no exception.

Aren't familiar with how a cycling store supports our young readers? Let us fill you in!
