Parents, teachers, and fellow librarians!  This is your chance to get up close and personal with the 2013 Youth Media Award winners and honors -- Caldecott Medal, Newbery Medal, Coretta Scott King Author & Illustrator Awards, Pura Belpré Award, Printz Award, Sibert Award, S

Have you ever noticed an accidental trend in your reading?  A central theme that ties books together that you didn't notice when you picked them up?  This happens to me all the time, and the most recent incident involved codes and ciphers.  I checked out a teen book, Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein, on my sister's recommendation.  And my hold on the second title in The Code Busters Club, The Haunted Lighthouse by Penny Warner, arrived almost simultaneously.  Both are excellent and sparked an interest in code making and breaking.  When you read them, you'll be curious too.  So, here's a list of books available at Hoover Public Library to satisfy that curiosity.

Whether you're in a reading slump or a reading frenzy, Teens Talk Books can help!  Stop by the Hoover Public Library on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at 6:30 pm.  Drink coffee while you share some of your recent favorites with other teens.  Eat cookies while you get book recs from Wendy, our teen librarian.  Can't make it on Tuesday?  Our Goodreads account can help!  And our monthly Reading Snapshot blog posts!  And, don't forget, you can always ask any of the Kid Zone and Teen Spot staff for a recommendation.

I admit it.  I have never read a single title in this series.  I can't read everything, people!  But I do know that these books have been flying off the shelves since they were first published.  Now that the movie is opening this Valentine's weekend, they don't even have the chance to make it back to the shelves before they're whisked away by teens craving a supernatural love story.  Warner Brothers is hoping this will be the first in a new franchise as popular as the Twilight saga.  What do you think?

Love is in the air -- a love of books!  Here's what our Kid Zone/Teen Spot staff is currently reading.

That's how I feel about anyone who hasn't read and/or watched The Princess Bride.  It is something very seldom experienced -- that rare occurence when the book and the movie are equally excellent.  And, since it's Valentine's Day, what could be a better blog subject than a love story featuring sword fights, fire swamps, Rodents of Unusual Size, and torture?  Nothing, that's what.  It's perfect for people in love AND people in the Pit of Despair.

February is Library Lovers' Month!  One of the best ways to demonstrate your love for Hoover Public Library is to fill out a comment card.  These lime green cards, available at every desk, give you the opportunity to tell us what we're doing right and suggest ways we can be even better.  You can also send an email to hvcontact@bham.lib.al.us or fill out this online form.

Ruta Sepetys is the author of Between Shades of Gray, a moving historical fiction novel that was named a 2012 William C. Morris YA Debut Award Finalist and a 2012 YALSA Top Ten Best Fiction for Young Adults.  It is also a staff favorite here at Hoover Public Library, which is why we're so excited to announce that Sepetys has a new book coming out tomorrow, February 12, 2013 -- Out of the Easy.

Let's face facts -- it is hard to fit reading into our jam-packed lives. Yes, even librarians have a difficult time finding a spare moment to sit down and read. That's why we are so grateful for audiobooks. They make it possible to fit reading into our work commute, our workout, and our housework. There are three audiobook formats available at Hoover Public Library -- book-on-CD, Playaway, and downloadable -- so you can choose whatever works best for you. If you're new to the realm of audiobooks, we've compiled a list of staff favorites to get you started.  You should also take a look at the Odyssey Award winners

Apparently, 2013 is the year for teen sequels.  Two more #2's came out yesterday, February 5, 2013.
Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi (Shatter Me)
Scarlet by Marissa Meyer (Cinder)

The City of Birmingham is commemorating 50 years of civil rights progress since the tumultuous year of 1963.  And this blogger wants to add her voice, but I simply cannot write anything better than this blurb from birminghamal.org.

I love Ally Carter, author of the Gallagher Girls series.  I usually know when she has a new book coming out, months before the release date.  But the third title in her Heist Society series snuck up on me.  It was a lovely surprise when I heard the news, but I refuse to let it happen again.  I like to be "in the know".  And I'm sure you do, too.  So mark your calendars -- Perfect Scoundrels by Ally Carter hits the shelves on Tuesday, February 5, 2013.

I'm super excited about two teen sequels that came out today, January 29, 2013.  Both have blue on their covers, hence the name of this blog post.  The first is The Prey by Andrew Fukuda, the sequel to The Hunt (which made our Best Teen Books of 2012 list).  The second is

We had a nice turnout for our first Library Skills 101 class in September, so we're offering a repeat of the course on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 10:30 a.m.  Students will learn their way around the Hoover Public Library by embarking on a fun scavenger hunt.  There will also be a session on navigating the online catalog.  This class is geared for homeschoolers, grades 3-8.  There's no fee and no registration is required.  If you have any questions, contact our outreach librarian Katie Jane (that's me!) at 444-7839.

Konnichi wa!  The Teen Spot's Manga Club is meeting this Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 6:30 p.m.  Fans of Japanese culture will have the opportunity to discuss manga with other enthusiasts and enjoy a short anime film.  And for snacks . . . candy sushi!  You don't have to RSVP.  Just follow the stars to the Program Room.

Sometimes, we're so focused on the winners, we overlook the runners-up.  And that is a big mistake!  In fact, in the case of the Newbery and Printz Awards, the runners-up are often more popular than the medalists.  Don't believe me?  Check out these lists of our staff's favorite honor books and see for yourself.  Find even more great runners-up when the 2013 Newbery and Printz Honor books are announced on Monday, January 28, 2013.

Sherlock Holmes, created by author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, first appeared in 1887.  The fictional detective quickly became famous for his uncanny ability to draw conclusions from the smallest details.  Holmes and his friend Dr. Watson are just as popular today as when they debuted.  There are two television shows -- Sherlock (BBC) and Elementary (CBS) -- and a series of blockbuster movies starring Robert Downey, Jr.  There is also an exciting book series by Andrew Lane, and the newest release, Black Ice, comes out on Tuesday, January 22, 2013.  Once you're read all three Young Sherlock Holmes titles, you'll want to start another series inspired by the great detective.  This list will help you do just that.

We've made a resolution to read more books in 2013. How about you?

A love out of time.  A spaceship built of secrets and murder.

Beth Revis's Across the Universe trilogy "just might make sci-fi cool again." (Booklist review)  The final book, Shades of Earth, comes out this Tuesday, January 15, 2013.  If you haven't yet discovered the drama aboard Godspeed, make sure you start at the beginning.  For more information, go to one of the following websites:

Starting a new year is always a great time to look back and decide which books of the year were your favorites.  A book on everyone’s must read list is from an Alabama native, John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars.  A favorite of the teen’s department, it was also named Time Magazine's best book of the year.  While not every book can be an award winner, here are a few books from the last year that we believe are worth reading and

Oh, there's no place like home for the holidays / 'Cause no matter how far away you roam / When you pine for the sunshine of a friendly face / For the holidays you can't beat home sweet home.  That song is right on the money.  At Christmastime, our hearts and minds are fixated on home.  So take a break from your holiday reading, and try one of these books set in Sweet Home Alabama.

I AM SO EXCITED!!!! Do you know what movie hit the big screen today, December 14, 2012? The first installment of Peter Jackson's return to the Shire -- The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.  I loved how he handled The Lord of the Rings trilogy.  And, as a child, I loved the animated version of The Hobbit. In fact, I used to terrorize my little sister with my dead-on impression of Gollum.  I finally read the book in high school and realized that my beloved cartoon left out a "bit" of the story.  Not sure if there's enough material to do THREE movies, but I can't wait to find out.  Stop by the Hoover Public Library to see the fantastic display in the Teen Spot.  And pick up every "little" hobbit thing that we have to offer.

When I sent an email out to our staff requesting their favorite holiday movies, I thought I'd get lists of DVDs.  And I did.  But I also got all these little bundles of Christmas memories too.  I feel so honored that my coworkers were willing to share their family traditions with me.  Those stories are what made this blog post one of my very favorite ones to put together.  Whether you need warm fuzzies, holiday hijinks, or Bruce Willis this Christmas, you'll find what you're looking for here.

Don't know what to read? Why not follow our lead? Here's what our Kid Zone / Teen Spot staff members have been reading.

First, it was a 1,500-page book: Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. Then, it became the world's longest-running stage musical -- seen by over 60 million people (including me) in 42 countries and winning 96 international awards. Now, Les Mis is coming to the big screen on Christmas Day. That doesn't give you much time to read the book. Better get busy!

The name's Bond . . . James Bond. Also known as Agent 007. He first appeared in a series of books by Ian Fleming, but catapulted to fame on the big screen. On October 5, 1962, the first Bond movie, Dr. No, introduced a larger audience to the Aston Martin-driving, shaken not stirred martini-drinking secret agent. And now -- 50 years, 6 actors, and innumerable Bond girls later -- the 23rd film, Skyfall, is in theatres.

We've been super busy around here, but have no fear! We haven't let that keep us from reading some great books in our spare time. Okay, maybe we should have been doing laundry or raking leaves instead. But give us a break! We have a reputation for being the best at reader's advisory, and we want to keep it that way.

John Flanagan's books are some of the most enthusiastically pursued titles at the Hoover Public Library. Many of our patrons (and one of our staff) haven't even been able to wait for the U.S. release dates. Instead, they order books from Mr. Flanagan's home country of Australia. Then they rub our faces in it when we have to wait. Well, the wait is over for the newest in The Brotherband Chronicles series. The third book, The Hunters, hits the shelves on Tuesday, October 30, 2012.

Forget vampires and werewolves. Forget demons and ghosts. Zombies are the hot horror genre of 2012. Here's just a few of the latest and greatest books about the hungry-for-brains monsters. Read up before you come to our Zombie Survival Workshop, the teen portion of Full Moon Fright Fest on Monday, October 29, 2012 at 6:30 p.m.
