Kid Stuff

And now, our favorite children's fiction of 2010. Quite a range of genres, so there's something for everyone!

Here are our favorite picture books of 2010! Happy Reading!

Inspired by Santa's jolly chuckle, our 2nd-5th grade book club decided to read books filled with laughs during our December 13th meeting. Here's a list of books sure to tickle your funny bone:

We've had a lot of requests for these pictures. Thanks for your patience! For those not in the know, these photos were taken during the following storytimes:
Together with Twos on November 8
Mother Goose on November 9
Early Birds on November 9
Tiny Tot Tales on November 10
After Lunch Bunch on November 10

Each child was proud to receive an American flag and a patriotic sticker in honor of our veterans.

November is a month of thankfulness, especially in our elementary book club. The Reader's Studio is thankful for the first-timers who came to this month's meeting, which focused on historical fiction. We dicussed thirteen novels, ranging from prehistoric times to the World War II era.

Uzma - Dinosaurs Before Dark by Mary Pope Osborne (prehistoric)

Elliot - Cave Dave by Carol McAdams Moore (prehistoric)

Emma - My Name Is Phillis Wheatley by Afua Cooper (mid-1700s)

It's a new year for our 2nd-5th grade book club, with a new format. While each month is still genre-based and features some excellent discussions, we've traded in our sack suppers for fun crafts. For our September 20th meeting, we all brought books from "Around the World". Here's a list of what our book clubbers shared:

1. Miss Mary Ann = First Light by Rebecca Stead (Greenland)

2. Aziza = Monsoon by Uma Krishnaswami (India)

3. Kaya = Bleach #7 by Tite Kuba (Japan)

The American Library Association announced all of their major awards for Children's and Teen books and media on Monday, January 18, 2010. For a complete list of winners and honors, please check out their website.

Every year, the Children's Department compiles a list of our favorite books for our teacher newsletter. This year, we would like to share those titles with everyone! It's a pretty long list, so we decided to break it down into 3 posts: picture books, fiction books, and nonfiction books. And now . . . our favorite picture books of 2009!

Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice by Phillip Hoose

This is a biography of Claudette Colvin, an African-American teenager in 1950s Montgomery, Alabama who refused to give up her seat on a bus nine months before Rosa Parks took the same stand.
