FICTION WINNER
Louise Erdrich, The Round House

The name's Bond . . . James Bond. Also known as Agent 007. He first appeared in a series of books by Ian Fleming, but catapulted to fame on the big screen. On October 5, 1962, the first Bond movie, Dr. No, introduced a larger audience to the Aston Martin-driving, shaken not stirred martini-drinking secret agent. And now -- 50 years, 6 actors, and innumerable Bond girls later -- the 23rd film, Skyfall, is in theatres.

Children in Alabama are very familiar with tornadoes, but they may not understand hurricanes. Even if they've heard of Hurricane Katrina and the trouble she caused for New Orleans in 2005, that was literally a lifetime ago for them. If you're trying to explain Hurricane Sandy and her aftermath to your kids, here's a list of books that can help.

The Detroit Tigers (American League champs) and the San Francisco Giants (National League champs) will go head-to-head in the 2012 World Series. Major League Baseball's 108th championship begins Wednesday, October 24, 2012. Get your head in the game with these books and movies!

Charlotte's Web by E.B. White was published on October 15, 1952. It was named a Newbery Honor Book in 1953. It has been translated into more than 30 languages, sold more than 25 million copies. It was ranked #1 in the Scholastic Parent & Child magazine's recent list of 100 greatest children's books. It was turned into an animated musical in 1973 and a live-action movie in 2006.

There's lots of new stuff in the Kid Zone. Five Preschool Nook Tablets are available for in-house check out in the picture book room. They are jam-packed with interactive books and educational games. You can also access our entire Tumblebook Library. Check out procedures are the same as for in-house laptop checkouts.

I am a planner. Ask anybody. I pick out my clothes the night before. I outline my storytimes a year in advance. Okay, I admit it, two years in advance. So it should come as no surprise that I had already lined up (and even written) all my blogs for this week. I wasn't looking for any newsworthy items. I had a plan. But you can't plan for everything because you can't know everything. And I did not know that this week included two major children's literature milestones that just have to be featured on the Hoover Public Library's blog.

If you read and loved Alabama Moon, you know exactly who Watt Key is. He's an Alabama author who writes raw and riveting coming-of-age stories that appeal to both avid and reluctant readers. Alabama Moon won multiple awards, was translated into seven languages, and turned into a movie. The companion novel, Dirt Road Home, earned Mr. Key the ALLA's Author Award at the 2012 Alabama Library Association's convention here in Hoover. And his newest book, Fourmile, was released on Tuesday, September 18, 2012.

September 19, 2012 is the tenth anniversary of International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Sure, a holiday devoted to talking like pirates sounds like a goofy idea, but I think everyone needs a little goofiness now and then. There are several ways the Hoover Public Library can help you celebrate. Obviously, we have plenty of books and movies about pirates. And, yes, there will be a list of some of the newest and best at the end of this post. But I want to focus on something you may not be aware of . . . Mango Languages.

Have you lost your pep for reading? Are you looking for a new way to experience picture books? Then we have GREAT NEWS! The Hoover Public Library now has access to TumbleBooks.

Beginning in September 2012, the Hoover Public Library's Kid Zone will be hosting two book clubs per month. Miss Polly will lead Book Buzz for grades 2-3. Our Local Record Labels Showcase is Thursday night and we're featuring some of Birmingham's finest songwriters. All four performers have performed in a variety of local bands over the years and are staples of Birmingham's club scene. This will be a unique opportunity to see them perform stripped down solo & duet versions of their songs. The show starts at 6:30 p.m. It is FREE and open to the public.

Help me, Hoover Public Library. You're my only hope.

Celebrate your favorite sci-fi saga on May the Fourth, a day for everyone to feel the power of the force. A galaxy of Star Wars books, DVDs and video games are waiting for you, and you won't need to use a Jedi Mind Trick to convince us to help you find them. Here's a cheat sheet to all things Star Wars at the library. And stay tuned for information about the library's after hours GeekFest on Friday, July 13, 2012.

The Hoover Public Library was once again voted Best Storytime in the 2012 Parent's Choice Awards, sponsored by Birmingham Magazine and Alabama Baby & Child Magazine. All winners are listed in the May issue of Birmingham Magazine. Congratulations to our storytellers! Three cheers (wait, better make that seven) for Mr. Jeremy, Miss Shawna, Miss Polly, Miss Laura, Miss Katie Jane, Miss Traci, and Miss April!

Our award-winning storytellers are taking a break from our Weekly Storytimes until after Labor Day. But Summer Reading is fast approaching, so you'll have an opportunity to see them Dream Big soon.

Twenty years ago, Bill Nye the Science Guy made his television debut. 100 episodes later, with more than 28 Emmys to his name and legions of fans, Nye is still proving that science rules! If you've never experienced the Science Guy's approach to science with fast-paced action and humor, it's time to get started. If you're already a fan, it's time to refresh your memory. The following titles are available right here at Hoover Public Library.

The American Library Association (ALA) announced the top books, video, and audiobooks for children and teens at its Midwinter Meeting in Dallas, Texas on Monday, January 23, 2012. The full list can be found at this website. Here are a few of the highlights. Several library favorites made the list, but there were some disappointed Hoover Public Librarians this morning. How do you feel about this supposed best-of-the-best?

The Kid Zone's pick actually won the National Book Award for Young People's Literature! Not only is it a completely amazing read, it also features our great state. Make sure you add Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai to your holiday reading list. Once you've finished it, you'll definitely want to take a look at this interview with the author.

I know what you're thinking. You're running through all the things named Hugo that might be important enough to feature on our library blog. I bet you thought of Victor Hugo, author of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. You might even have come up with the Hugo Award, which recognizes excellent science fiction and fantasy every year. But I'm referring to the Hugo created by Brian Selznick in his groundbreaking, Caldecott Award-winning book The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Martin Scorsese has brought it to theatres, and it is getting rave reviews. Read the book first (of course you will), then take a trip to the movies and see why everyone's talking about Hugo.

See the full list here. And did you know that one of the Young People's Literature finalists has an Alabama tie? Be sure to check out Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai.

The Son of Neptune, the newest title in Rick Riordan's Heroes of Olympus series, is here! And it's release offically kicks off a seven-day, coast-to-coast celebration called Olympian Week. The author will be making a stop at each of the seven winning cabins:
Hades = Columbia, South Carolina
Athena = Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Ares = Toronto, Canada
Aphrodite = Burlington, Massachusetts
Hephaestus = Mission Veijo, California
Poseidon = Tumwater, Washington
Zeus = Austin, Texas
Each cabin is a bookstore or library who submitted some awesome party ideas to win the contest. Congrats, guys!

Life is full of interesting coincidences, isn't it? Example: I discovered Bicicloteca during the Hoover Public Library's week-long salute to Brazil.

Bicicloteca is Brazil's adaptation of a mobile library. It's a large tricycle that has been outfitted with a compartment capable of carrying 150kg of books. It doesn't require a driving license or expensive fuel, and it can easily manuever through the busy streets. I don't think I'll ever look at a tricycle the same way again.

Seven rhymed tales, dug from hard to find places!
Look for millions of Seuss fans with bright shiny faces!
(from Kirkus Reviews)

The Bippolo Seed and Other Lost Stories features seven Seuss tales originally published in Redbook in 1950 and 1951.
1. The Bear, the Rabbit, and the Zinniga-Zanniga
2. Gustav the Goldfish
3. Tadd and Todd
4. Steak for Supper
5. The Bippolo Seed
6. The Strange Shirt Spot
7. The Great Henry McBride

These seven stories were hunted down by Seuss scholar/collector Charles D. Cohen, who also penned the informative introduction. The end result is a must-read for all fans of the good doctor.

Our very own librarian-journalist, Assistant Director Amanda Bonner, reports weekly to the Birmingham News on all the happenings at Hoover Public Library.

Check out her latest article, from March 2, 2011: Southern Voices Does Not Disappoint.

Birmingham's own Fannie Flagg has a new book being released today. I Still Dream About You is being touted as a "comic mystery romp through the streets of Birmingham, Alabama, past, present, and future." Make sure to reserve your copy today!

About a year ago, anonymous English street artist Banksy painted a piece on an abandoned gas station in Ensley (see Birmingham Weekly story about it here.) The controversial piece lasted only about a day and a half before it was stolen. Banksy did the piece during a tour across the US that was centered around doing a lot of Hurricane Katrina themed pieces in New Orleans around the third anniversary of the storm.

The nonfiction department recently added two Banksy books to the collection so you can read more about the underground art icon that graced our fair city with his art:

With many people getting ready for a beach vacation we thought we would pass along a poll conducted by National Public Radio showing their listener's Top 100 Picks for the Beach. The 100 Best Beach Books Ever Poll was taken in July with over 16,000 people. Below we have listed the top 10. Each with a link to the catalog.
