Teen Tech Week is a national initiative sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). It aims to ensure that teens are competent and ethical users of technology resources in the library, both for education and recreation.

I'm a big fan of Scrabble. And I don't just mean playing the game. I've also been known to sport the jewelry. In fact, I currently have four different necklaces made out of Scrabble tiles. It's the ultimate in recycling!

Want to have a Scrabble tile necklace of your very own? Teens can join Miss Wendy on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. for a chance to make this unique fashion accessory. The Hoover Public Library will provide all the supplies. Just bring yourself. Or, better yet, bring a friend or two with you.

If you or your parents need more information about this event, just call the Teen Spot at 444-7826.

The American Library Association announced their youth media award winners in San Diego on Monday, January 10, 2011. Due to inclement weather, the Hoover Public Library is a day late getting this information to our patrons. But we are open for business today, so without further delay . . .

The American Library Association (ALA) and the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) started Teen Read Week in 1998, and it is still going strong. In fact, teen books, like Twilight by Stephenie Meyer and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, are hotter than ever, even with adults. This year's theme, Books With Beat, inspired teens across the country to vote for their favorite titles of 2010. The Top Ten list was revealed this week. And the winners are . . .

1. Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

2. City of Glass by Cassandra Clare

Our Seventh Annual Battle of the Teen Bands on Saturday, June 5, 2010 was a HUGE success! So huge, in fact, that it took us almost an entire month to get everything assembled so we could blog about it. Thanks for your patience.

This year's battle featured five bands: Remedy, A Band, Flying Afros, 13th Gravestone, and Skin Deep. Each had 15 minutes to wow the 202 people in the audience, including the four judges. Special thanks to Jill, Mollie, Casey, and Clint for lending their time and musical expertise to our event!

Each band was scored on musicality, originality, appeal, and showmanship. The two bands with the highest scores each earned a cash prize, provided by the Friends of the Library. Thank you, Friends!

The American Library Association announced all of their major awards for Children's and Teen books and media on Monday, January 18, 2010. For a complete list of winners and honors, please check out their website.

Teen literature is a favorite among many of the librarians at Hoover. While we will never all agree about which book is our favorite, we can agree about some of the best 2009 has to offer.
