Did you know that Sharpie permanent markers first appeared in 1964?  Can you think of anything else colorful from the 60s?  I bet you can, and I bet it's called tie-dye.  And you would be right.  Tie-dye was very prominent in the 1960s.  However, you would also be horribly wrong.  Tie-dye is an ancient art form that can even be found in fourth century Chinese tombs.  The Hoover Public Library would like to invite teens (grades 7-12) to continue this artistic trend.  The Teen Spot is hosting a Sharpie Tie-Dye event on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 6:30 p.m.  Using nothing but Sharpie markers, a t-shirt and rubbing alcohol, make a creation that looks like traditional tie-dye.  Registration is required.  You can register online or by calling 444-7826.

Author Sarah Dessen speaks to the hearts of teenage girls better than anyone.  Her characters are so real, their problems so easy to identify with.  Her newest book, The Moon and More, will be available on Tuesday, June 4, 2013Emily has the perfect little life, but that is exactly the problem.  Yes, Colby is the ideal secluded beach town community and her boyfriend Luke could not be more attentive; but, after the arrival of a New York filmmaker, she's beginning to wonder if she should be outgrowing it.  Let's hope Dessen never runs out of stories to share.

We are only closed for two days the entire summer.  The first one is coming on Monday, May 27, 2013 -- Memorial Day.  Enjoy the holiday with your family and friends!

Surely I have misunderstood. I mean, why would you postpone being part of something that is both fun and free, not to mention impressive to parents? It makes no sense. Unless you've somehow never heard about our Summer Reading program? Yes, that's got to be it. Okay, here's the deal. Kids (birth-rising 6th graders) can sign up for Dig Into Reading. Teens (rising 7th graders-rising 12th graders) can sign up for Groundbreaking Reads.  You can sign up any time the library is open, May 17-July 26, 2013.  All you have to do is stop by the Kid Zone or Teen Spot at the Hoover Public Library, tell us what grade you'll be in when school resumes, and tell us what school you will be attending.  Simple.  We'll give you a reading log.  You write down every book (or audiobook or ebook) you read (or listen to) from May 17 to August 9, 2013.  You write down the number of pages in each book.  You add up all the pages.  Easy peasy.  You show us your reading log every time you come to the library.  We give you a ticket for every 100 pages you read.  You collect tickets and exchange them for prizes in the prize room (which opens Monday, June 3).  There are 2-ticket, 5-ticket, 10-ticket, and 15-ticket prizes and 20-ticket books to choose from.  If you're a teen, you also have the option to use your tickets as chances to win one of several big/awesome/fabulous prize drawings -- Kindle Fire, Nintendo 3DS, Visa Gift Card, iPod Nano.  If you're a kid, you get to enter for a chance to win a brand new bike from Bike Link when you reach 500 pages.

Now you have all the facts about Summer Reading.  And you've watched our commercial.  (What do you mean you didn't watch a commercial?  Didn't you click on the blue?)  So, seriously, what are you waiting for?  Quit reading this blog and sign up today!
