The Library Plaza IS Happening!

July 19, 2008
This is the first update for the Hoover Public Library’s Plaza Project!
The Hoover Public Library’s groundbreaking ceremony for the Plaza project was held on Monday, June 16, 2008 at 5 p.m. Whether our patrons want to relax, to read a magazine or newspaper, to shop in the Friends bookstore, get a cup of coffee or be entertained and educated on the Plaza stage – The Plaza will be a wonderful destination for everyone in our community. The library will offer a variety of programs on the Plaza stage, including book readings, artists’ demonstrations, musical performances, movies and other performances.
A patio area, including the existing gazebo, will surround the Plaza with a reading garden and patio seating. A group of volunteer Master Gardeners, led by Hope Long, Director of the Botanical Gardens Library, will design and plant the reading garden area.
Evan Terry Architects designed the Plaza addition for the Library. They also designed the original library building and the 2001 expansion of the library building.
The contractor for the project is Duncan and Thompson Construction Services. Construction will begin on July 21, 2008.
During construction, the second library entrance off Municipal Drive into the library will be closed. To access the Library Theatre’s box office, please park in front of the library and enter through the front door to take the elevator down to the Theatre Level. One section of the parking lot will not be available during the project. It will be used by the contractors as a staging area for construction materials and work area. The main library entrance off Municipal Drive and the library entrance off Sierra Drive will remain open during construction. The library’s patio area will be closed beginning Monday, July 21.
During the first phase of construction, the Library may, at times, be a little noisier than usual due to the demolition of the patio area – there may even be a few shakes and bumps along the way.
Please bear with us during the next five months as we work toward completing this exciting addition to our library. If you missed the groundbreaking ceremony, you can watch it online (see link below).
We have also posted pictures from the groundbreaking ceremony
