Hoover Library now offers downloadable audiobooks from two sources. Overdrive's collection of downloadable audiobooks are available to all residents of Jefferson County, but Hoover residents are also able to download audiobooks from hoopla with no holds, no waiting!

Outreach To Daycares: In an effort to expose young children to books at a very early age, the Children's Department offers outreach services to daycare centers located in the City of Hoover. We can visit your location four times each year to promote books, reading and libraries through a special storytime presentation. Call our preschool outreach coordinator Traci Wood to schedule a visit for your school, 444-7837.
We subscribe to almost 200 popular magazines and several newspapers and are a distribution point for a number of free local publications. New issues are in the Newstand on the Library Plaza and are available for reading in-library. Most past issues of magazines are available for checkout for three weeks. To find a specific magazine, you can search the library catalog by journal title, but a visit to the library will give you a better idea of what's available. We are always happy to consider your magazine suggestions!
Introducing Hoover Public Library’s DIGITAL MEDIA LAB
The Digital Media Lab provides the Hoover community access to audio and video equipment for their digital projects. The DML shares space with the Technology Training Center and is available by appointment. The DML room and equipment is reserved for special projects rather than general computing, which is available throughout the library.
Enjoy incredible reading & entertainment on NOOK Readers preloaded with books. We have several NOOKs to choose from. Check them out just like a book and take them home. If you really like the convenience of a eReader but don't want to download books yourself this is a fun and easy solution.

The Friends Bookstore has a large collection of paperback, as well as popular hardbacks, magazines and puzzles. The money raised from the sale of these items will be used to benefit the Library. Staffed by volunteers of the Friends of the Hoover Public Library.
Thanks to a small group of energetic and determined Hoover residents the FRIENDS was established in 1982. They recognized the need for a library in the rapidly expanding city of Hoover and the rest is history. Join and you’ll be glad you did.
Any resident of Hoover or Jefferson County can get a library card at the Hoover Public Library, free of charge. Patrons over the age of fifteen must show a driver's license with current address or a form of government issued photo ID and verification of current address (i.e., piece of mail, lease agreement, checkbook, bill statement, etc.). Children under fifteen must have a parent or legal guardian sign a responsibility statement. The parent or legal guardian must sign the application.

The Technology Hub has laptops for checkout within the library. These PCs have access to the internet, Microsoft Office 2007 and are connected to a wireless printer. These laptops can be checked out and used in the library until 15 minutes before close. In order to check out a laptop you have to have a Government issued ID and a library card that allows you to check out materials. You must owe $5 or less in order to check out items. In accordance with the Library Bill of Rights, the primary purpose of library meeting rooms is to serve the needs of library-sponsored programs and services, and such functions shall always have priority. Otherwise, priority for use of the meeting rooms will be given to (1) Friends of the Library meetings or programs, and (2) City of Hoover meetings and functions. The Hoover Public Library provides meeting room space when available for use by Hoover community groups and organizations whose goals are civic and educational only. Each application will be reviewed and evaluated individually. The Board may examine the groups past history, goals and purposes to ensure equitable use. Use of the meeting room facilities is subject to the rules and regulations established by the Library Board of Trustees.

In the Technology Hub, located on the main level, we offer 12 workstations for word processing and business automation software so patrons can type research papers, resumes, create spreadsheets, publications and projects. In addition we have two scanners and laptops for in library use. Headphones are sold for $2 and Flash Drives for $5 at the service desk. The Hoover Public Library provides fiction book kits! Each kit contains: 10 or more copies of the title, author biography, reviews of the book, discussion questions and other pertinent information. Each kit checks out to one patron for six weeks.

The Books You Want… Before You Know You Want Them! Check out the Fiction Department’s automatic reserve service – “Book My Favorites”. Complete a “Book My Favorites” form telling us the authors whose new books you want to read. If one of the authors releases a new hardcover fiction title, we will automatically reserve it for you. You won’t have to remember to come in or call. While we can’t guarantee how near the top of the list you’ll be each time, it’s one less thing you’ll have to do! Your membership in the “Book My Favorites” program will be effective for any new books released after we receive your request.

The Hoover Public Library has a collection development policy in place to ensure all library collections meet the needs of our library users. Donated books will be considered for addition to the collection based on the library’s Materials Selection policy. Local and state authors who request their books be added to our collections are encouraged to read the
