Thank A Vet! Hoover's Weeklong Salute To Veterans 2016


Hoover's weeklong salute to veterans will begin Sunday, November 6. Join us for activities designed to honor those who have bravely served our country.

Kickoff Event - NOV 6, 2016

Veterans Reception

Come and enjoy patriotic music during the program by our special guest, the Alabama Youth Symphony! The program, reception and concert will be located in the library’s newly renovated theatre level.
Hoover Library Theatre • 2:00 pm

Music Program: Alabama Youth Symphony - In Concert

After the program, the Alabama Youth Symphony will present a musical concert at 2:45 p.m.• FREE!
The Library Theatre • 2:45 pm


A reception will be held immediately after the concert
Newley Renovated Theatre Level • 3:15 pm

Kickoff Flag Folding Ceremony

Following the reception, join us around the library’s flagpole at 4:00 p.m. for a kick-off flag folding ceremony.

Presidetial Trivia Program With Jerry Desmond, Executive Director of Birmingham History Center

Monday, November 7 - test your knowledge with the Friends of the Library.  Special guest, Jerry Desmond, Executive Director of Birmingham History Center, will present a presidential trivia program.

Special Movie: The Homefront

Monday, November 7 - The Homefront, a close-up documentary about American military life and their families.
The Library Theatre (Two Showings) 2:00 p.m. and at 6:30 p.m.

Program: Thank A Vet Author Skype with Siobhan Fallon,
author of You Know When the Men are Gone

Wednesday, November 16 • 10 a.m. - Theatre Conference Room - FREE!

Wall of Honor

See pictures of veterans from all wars and submit your own family members’ images to be added.


Visit the Kid’s Zone to make a craft for a veteran, enter in a poster contest and receive a flag during story time programs.

Military Uniform Display

View uniforms from various branches of the service.


Flag Folding Ceremony

Join us at the flagpole at 4:45 pm from  Monday, Nov 7 through Thursday, Nov 10 as we retire the colors. 

POW/MIA Table Display

See this salute to veterans who are Prisoners of War or Missing in Action.
